Who says a Mint Julep is only for the Kentucky Derby? While the Mint Julep may have gained popularity because of its iconic role in the Kentucky Derby, it is a great cocktail that you can enjoy any time of the year. In honor of National Bourbon Day, we thought we’d mix up a fun Mint Julep variation for you to make at home and enjoy all summer long!
Did you know the Mint Julep has been the official cocktail of the Kentucky Derby for about a century now? All around the world, Kentucky Derby viewers sip Juleps on this special day. Fun fact: Woodford Reserve famously serves a unique variation every year at the actual Derby, donating proceeds to charity and costing $1,000 per Julep.
But don’t worry, this variation won’t cost you $1,000! For this cocktail, you will need some gorgeous fresh mint, about half a bunch, a can of High Peaks Watermelon Mint Sparkling Water and Hemp Extract, fresh guava purée or guava juice, and simple syrup.
High Peaks Mint Julep
In a shaker, add:
- 8-10 large fresh mint leaves
- 1 ounce guava juice/purée
Lightly muddle the mint and guava together, then add:
- 2 ounces bourbon (Woodford Reserve recommended)
- ¾ ounce simple syrup
- Fill your shaker with ice, shake well and strain over fresh ice in a highball glass.
- Add more ice to fill the glass.
Top with 3 ounces of High Peaks Watermelon Mint Sparkling Water and Hemp Extract and for an added bonus, add in a dropper of High Peaks Mint CBD Tincture.
Use about 3 stems of pretty, full mint as garnish. Express it first in your hand to get the leaves to open up and add minty freshness to the nose of the drink.
Serve with a straw.
This is going to be a tropical, minty, delicious refresher. The overlying flavors are the guava and mint, with underlying hints of watermelon and bourbon. I’m obsessed with how this drink turned out!
Cheers to the everyone finding their peak!!
